Filmmaker & Creative Director
Jordan James is a Chicago-based filmmaker and storyteller whose work centers on identity, movement, memory, and the lived experiences of Black communities. A recent graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Jordan earned a degree in Film & Television with a minor in Black World Studies, bringing an interdisciplinary lens to her approach to visual storytelling. Her work is rooted in an interest in how personal history, imagination, and cultural inheritance shape the ways people see themselves and the world around them.
Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Jordan’s creative foundation was influenced early on by film, television, and dance. As a child, she found connection and inspiration in on-screen representations that reflected pieces of her own life, drawing from popular media not only as entertainment but as a tool for self-discovery. Before transitioning fully into filmmaking, Jordan was classically trained in ballet and modern dance—an experience that continues to inform her visual style, particularly her attention to movement, rhythm, and physical storytelling within the frame.
During her academic career, Jordan developed a strong interest in narrative and documentary filmmaking, as well as sound design. Her projects often explore themes of self-reflection, freedom, resilience, and the interior lives of Black women and girls. Notable works include NINA, a short film following a high school senior in a dance conservatory as she reflects on her relationship with dance and her aspirations for the future, and Girl with Wings, a visually poetic short that explores Black girlhood, imagination, and the desire for liberation through metaphor and symbolism. These projects highlight Jordan’s commitment to character-driven stories and emotionally grounded visuals.
In addition to directing, Jordan has experience in production design, script supervision, interview transcription, and social media management for creative organizations. She is known for her strong leadership skills, collaborative spirit, and attention to detail, particularly in shaping visual environments that support narrative intention. Her background in both creative and organizational roles allows her to navigate film sets with adaptability and clarity.
Currently, as a fresh post-graduate, Jordan is focused on continuing to develop original film projects while gaining hands-on experience within professional production spaces. She is especially interested in documentary storytelling and working within production houses that prioritize meaningful, socially conscious narratives. Looking ahead, Jordan aspires to produce and direct films that amplify under-told Black stories and challenge dominant narratives through intimacy, care, and visual intention.
Through her work, Jordan seeks to create films that feel honest, reflective, and rooted in lived experience—stories that invite audiences to pause, feel, and recognize themselves in moments both quiet and transformative.
